Oh, and one more thing
November 30, 2013, 05:04:09 PM Posted by Arantor on November 30, 2013, 05:04:09 PM in Oh, and one more thing | 59 CommentsIn true Apple style, I got one more thing to tell you about.
I've been working on an alerts system for the core. It's still very much a WIP but it's very exciting for me to be working on it. This is, for me, the last major thing I want to get done before a 2.1 beta, so once this is done, I would hope a beta won't be far behind but I know there is some other stuff that we will need to do for the beta - there's some major bugs that need squishing first for example.
Screenshots attached. I don't think I need to say too much more (It's not yet in Github, don't get *that* excited)

Can't wait to see that working.

I love you Arantor.
Nice.
Thanks Arantor. Keep up the good work.
Good work! I will be interested to see how this comes out.
intriguing yes?
Awesome!
Does it share anything with the one I made for Wedge?
Sounds fantastic!
Thanks for the update

No. Even though that was BSD, I really do not want to get into a fight with Nao over ownership of code and thus it is from scratch.
Hi Arantor,
Is this going to be dynamic, like push notifications?
Also, is it a hybrid of ajax, php etc?

No, because that would flatter your server to be pushing. It is updated every time you move to a new page, or if you click on the alerts menu, and the menu itself is loaded AJAXively.
I believe that that's exactly what I was thinking of, when I started some weird topic, in some other weird board, mate.
* K@ wonders if Arantor IS a mind-reader, after all...

In short ...
Great ..
Great ..
nice update, would be very interesting if is added an alert system, when someone mentions you (like @Arantor) on a topic (same as twitter), had already suggested to Suki in Spanish Forum.
That was already on my list of alerts.

I haven't been this excited about SMF in years. I keep checking github for changes everyday.

Same here.... :-)
Oh boy, Arantor back and on the Dev team!... I've been away too long. Hope to see SMF back on track (meaning frequent releases with solid functionality and modern/innovative well-polished features).
"frequent" releases will likely never happen.
We are not paid for what we do. We do this because we enjoy doing it... but it often takes a back seat to "real life" (as it should)

"Frequent" is relative. Compared to "One version a decade", "One version every five years" is pretty frequent.
I'm dead against releasing stuff, every so often, just for the Hell of it, myself. Releases for fixes, &c. sure. But, other than those, I only believe new releases are worth doing if there're BIG changes.

And that's the policy I have.
I know, better than most, how hard it is getting people to have the security upgrades. The conclusion I came to a long time ago is that the best way of getting people to upgrade is to give them a compelling reason to do so - i.e. lots of awesome new things.
Now, I could churn out a new release every 6 months with a few incremental updates but honestly you'd all hate me for it for all the hassle it would cause. So better to have a new release every 12-18 months that's major enough to deal with upgrading mods than one every 6-8 where you find yourself constantly out of step.

By frequent I mean every 1-2 years. I wouldn't like it to turn to a "mediawiki forced upgrade style" every 6 months or so, but I think it's unquestionable that SMF development has been too slow in the last 5 years. Too many ideas and things started, but too few really finished (at least with high quality and 'polishment'). I think you get what I mean.
I always feel that "forcing" regular updates, for the sake of it, results in bloat, too, which is never a Good ThingTM.
Any chance a "Default Avatar" can be slid in before beta?

Thanks for the link. I see that there is a need for a non-gender default avatar? I whipped up one real quick in illustrator. Attached is the screenshot. If you like, I can try to submit this to Github. Although, I don't know how to use Github and just signed up today.
Questions though, what format? I was thinking PNG with transparent background. Should it have a border? Should be a different color than what I currently have? Where do I deposit the ai file so that others can use/modify it if need be? What dimensions should it be?
Crap, I cannot attach a screenshot of what I'm done so far. OK, I uploaded to my public domain, but it won't stay there long. You can see it HERE.
I don't want to commit too much to it if no one likes it.
Ok, I just looked at the other avatars. I don't think the one I made will fit in, as it's flat and the others are not.
I like it, but I'm not sure what other people think. You should be able to upload it to the issue on Github, actually...
I decided the one I was working on didn't fit into the other avatars. So I started another one, but it is still a work in progress. See a screenshot of my work on it HERE. What do you think? Does it look like it would fit both genders?
I don't know how close you are to beta, but I would like to get this in before beta. I just need more time to polish(not happy with the collar of the shirt).

I think it could fit both, yes. Nice work so far.
I'm at a point now, where I'm considering making several to make a exclusive SMF avatar set. One default, where you can't tell the gender(no face). Then do a few males/females in various clothing. Like a t-shirt, suit, tux, etc. I'm just worried I'll spend all this time on it and no one will want it.
I've already did the suit, and tux. However, facial features on all of them(except default) are going to be a challenge for me an will require some time.

Realistically, the images I think we'd need to be adding are a generic genderless avatar (for those who don't specify a gender) and a generic male/generic female avatar which get pulled when there's no avatar set otherwise.
That said, having a full avatar set selectable as a gallery option could be neat.
I'm liking the direction you're going in

There are a few problems of course. I didn't realize it until an hour ago. Ethic background could be an issue for some. So I've created a caucasian, tan, and black bodies. You can see a screenie HERE. The problem is what color should the default avatar be? Not only does it seem that an avatar should be genderless, but also ethic-less? I'm open to suggestions.
At the moment, I'm thinking the default avatar should be SMF blue(skin tone)?

Hmm, ethnic colouring could indeed be a problem, and they usually go for silhouettes - but even that is, of course, a problem.
I don't know what to do for the best though :/

Bah, what as I thinking? I'll just do greyscale for the default. I'll need to test it against SMF backgrounds to make sure it's not too light or dark.
Make them purple. You can't claim racism if they're purple
Yeah but others will complain that it's an inappropriate colour >_<

lol. It's funny because there is truth to that statement.
That's why I said it Related, we had a conversation on here the other day about including other genders and we concluded that we couldn't add other genders without causing problems.
Here is what I came up with for the default avatar. Pretty much final unless there are any objections. I tried the best I could to make it where you can't tell if it's male or female, and it's greyscale. I'll try to submit this tomorrow on Github if I can figure out how. What should I name the file?
Screenshot
I'll try to finish up the colored male & female icons by next week. I can do the clothes in a day, but facial items will take alot of tweaking and experimentation to get it right.

Nice job. I would name it default_av myself.
I really like that
I like it a lot, too. If you make it any better, members will want to keep that one and not select one of their own to replace it.
It really is excellent.
