SMF Team Blog

A Special Thanks to Go Daddy.

A Special Thanks to Go Daddy.

The SMF Team received some exciting news recently. Domain Registrar Go Daddy donated a significant amount of money to the SMF project. Simple Machines would like to publicly thank Go Daddy here on our forums for their support.

“The open source community really helped make the Internet what it is today,” said Warren Adelman, President and COO of GoDaddy.com. “These projects help millions of Web users everyday and we are grateful to groups like Joomla and Simple Machines for moving open source initiatives forward.”

"We've made great strides in our [short] three year existence. A donation of this magnitude from Go Daddy is further validation of just how much our software has impacted the open source community," says Project Manager Amacythe of Simple Machines LLC.

We are thrilled to see Go Daddy reach out to the open source community. As an added thanks, we've put up a special “Thank You Go Daddy banner”. Just our way of letting them know their donation was much appreciated.

For those interested, you can see the press release at Go Daddy’s website.

Very nice to see open projects (especially like SMF) are supported by big companies like GoDaddy.

In the press release, they (GoDaddy) mention only Joomla and SMF. Nothing else.
(Was yours a sarcasm? :) )

Probably paying to servers and stuff, but I have no idea (I'm just guessing).
Managing the money is the job of the Project Managers ;)

Simple Machines Forum ... received the donations from GoDaddy.com to assist in further development of their applications.

How is this possible?  If I remember correctly, SMF is not open source.

SMF is open source in the core understanding (all source is distributed with the product and can be modified). We simply have a custom licence which does not allow distribution by others. You dont need an osi license to be open source.

Not sure if you noticed this but on that Go Daddy Advertisement, if your mouse hovers over it, It says Goi Daddy, instead of Go Daddy.

This is good news, especially, since I host my domains with GoDaddy. I haven't had any problems ever with them. I have noticed a significant amount of advertising from them lately.
