SMF Team Blog

Get to know the team: Daniel15

Posted by Daniel15 on December 30, 2006, 02:42:05 AM

Name: Daniel Lo Nigro
Age: 16
Location: Melbourne, Australia
Favorite Quote: "The day Microsoft makes something that does not suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners" (stolen borrowed from c2h5oh's signature)
Position: SMF Customizer

1. Do you have pets?
Yeah, 2 dogs
2. What is your favorite color?
I don't really have one favourite colour, although I do like blue and orange
3. What kind of music do you like?
Mainly anything that isn't Rap or Country
4. What do you do on your free time besides spending time on SMF?
Mainly programming work (in either PHP, Visual Basic 2005, Linux [Bash shell scripting] or DarkBasic)
5. What are your goals/dreams in life?
At the moment, it's to finish high school, and go on to university.
6. What got you involved in SMF?
I got involved in SMF back in 2004, when people were desperate to get a shop mod for SMF. At the time, I was looking at about 10 or so open-source forum systems, and SMF seemed to be the best one out of all of them.
As my interest in SMF grew over the years, I noticed a few unanswered posts in the support boards. Seeing as I had nothing else to do, I started posting replies to those support queries. After doing this for a while, I got contacted by jerm, who asked me if I'd like to become a support team apprentice. After a short period, I joined the SMF team as a Customizer.
7. Who do you admire? Why?
I admire a lot of people... I admire the whole SMF Team for their dedication to producing a high-quality forum system (especially [Unknown], because if it weren't for him, SMF definately wouldn't have been what it is now) :).
8. Are you into sports?  If so which ones?
Me? Sports?
9. What is your dream job?
A programmer in some large company :D
10. What was your first screenname?
My first screen name was Daniel15 (chosen by me in 2003), although I'd previously used 'TheBest' on some forums (chosen by a friend, not me :P). I chose Daniel15 whilst signing up for my old ISP... I wanted the username 'Daniel', but it was taken, so I needed to make up something on the spot.
11. Do you have any piercings?
No
12. Are you a lefty/righty or ambidextrous?
Right-handed, although I also use my left hand to do most things (except write)
13. Do you have any tattoo's?  If not do you wish/plan to get one?
No
14. Do you have any siblings?  If so how many of each.
One sister, two step sisters and a half brother.
15. What is your favorite website?
I have a few favourite sites, although the sites I visit most are http://www.simplemachines.org/, http://www.frihost.com/forum/, and http://www.digg.com/

Three
30. What time do you go to bed?  What time do you wake up?
During the holidays, I usually go to bed about 1:00 AM (after checking the Simple Machines community forum one last time), and wake up about 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. During school days, I go to bed at 10:30 PM and wake up about 7:30 AM.
31. What's the freakiest thing you have done?
I haven't really done anything freaky :P
32. Do you live alone?
Nope, I still live with my parents. My mum and dad are divorced, so I'm at my mum's house sometimes, and my dad's house other times (my dad doesn't have a good Internet connection, so that's why I don't make as many posts as other people do ;))

  a. As an administrator?
  Definately the Package Manager.
  b. As an end user?
Quick reply, Inline editing, and the 'Show unread posts since last visit' feature (that actually works properly compared to other boards)
  And smileys, of course! :D

Like Peter Duggan said, one shared parent. In this case, my father got divorced and remarried ;)

I just hate what they do...
I was joking anyways (hence the :P). I was a person that didn't code PHP scripts properly at one point.

Not sure about which, Daniel?
Heh, I should have been more specific :P. I meant that I wasn't sure if I'm going to get married ;).
And I just realised that planning was spelt wrong :P

Yeah, I can program in Visual Basic 2005, TI-BASIC for TI-84 (haven't learnt it for the TI-89 yet) and I'm trying to learn Bash scripting. I know a few other languages, but don't use them extensively (I can usually debug Perl scripts as well as understand basic C code, but have no idea how to write them from scratch :P)
I can also do HTML and CSS, but that's not really coding as such, is it? ;)

Look through some tutorial sites (w3schools.com is quite good).
Also, take a look through the documentation on php.net (especially the documentation on syntax, and tutorials) :)

Good on ya, Dan!

Daniel helped me immensely when I was attempting to set up a local server.  He was the only person to respond to my initial post for help (got more help later from others), AND he stayed with it for a period of a week or more as I floundered around trying to understand the very expert advice he gave me.  Expert, diligent, thoughtful and a very effective communicator.  He's gonna make some boss very happy after university!

Oh, yeah !  Ask him if he likes root beer!  Inside joke: After getting localhost to work, I offered to buy the beers if he ever visited Texas - not knowing he won't be legal for a few years yet.  (Hey! Who knew?  We murricans think all Aussie's are beer drinkers after they quit pap.)  :P  So I told him he would forevermore be known as 'Root Beer'.

There is one thing that caught my interest.

My associates really raze me about still playing the old dos games and using dos programs.

I am going to print what you said about dos games,  show them and ha them.

Thanks

Hehe :P
I started learning PHP a few years ago, and I'm still learning a bit now (my approach is to learn by doing :))

Yeah, server problems, combined with clueless data centre staff ;). Since Dynamic-Sig.com and DansoftAustralia.net are on the same server, both were down.

Daniel15.com is on another server, but the DNS and mail is hosted on the server that was down (I host the email there due to the spam filtering, and I haven't bothered moving the DNS yet :P). When it appears to be down, http://daniel15.frihost.net/ should still work :)

Do you mind giving a accurate graph of your average time spend online over a 2 month period?
Let me just find the graph I have lying around :P

Assuming you use Firefox you can produce a graph using this extension:
